Kim has made these awesome pieces of ART using some PID images!!
Kim created these designs on her computer. Its fun to let people see how the computer can help create snappy designs to go on the front of cards or tops of boxes. They can even print them and frame them for the wall. They can even be jazzed up with glitter. These particular designs were created on Microsoft Picture It, but Photoshop does the same things.

Hi Everyone!

Wow, I can't believe that March is almost over and that the daffodils, redbuds and pear trees are in bloom!! I am always amazed at this time of year at how beautiful and fresh everything looks and I am still astounded that green can be so, well, green!

I joined the Design Team of Paper Imagery Designs this year and I am so very thankful for this opportunity. I love the images and how I have been able to incorporate them into my own creations which brings me to the why of this post this evening.

It was my plan to have posted two of my projects over the last two weeks but a life crisis occured with a family friend so, as so many plans can, that flew right out the window. Well, plans are back on and I wanted to let you know that this weekend I will be posting images of a project that I will be completing using several of the Paper Imagery Design images, regular paper and resin.

Then, within just a few days of that please be on the lookout for a wonderfully simple gift bag that you can make for any and all occasions. Instructions and photographs will appear in both posts.

Chipboard Tag Set Basic Supplies

Chipboard Pieces of Your Desired Sizes
Glue Stick
Hot Glue Gun
Fibers in coordinating colors.
Glossy Accents – Crackle
Trim
Super Fine Glitter (to use as an accent)
Fluid Chalks (I like to use light pink, light brown, darker brown and yellow to blend together)
Rubber Stamp(s) of your choosing
Dimensional items to attach (not too heavy)
Scissors
Light Sanding Paper/cloth

Look at the images and try placing one in different ways on the heart. Once you have chosen the image and its placement use your glue stick to attach it to the front of your heart. Press it down to make sure that it adheres well.

Use your fluid chalks to add color around the edge of the heart blending it on the sides and top edge of the chipboard. Set aside. Color your crown using the fluid chalks and trim the crown if necessary. Place a drop of Glossy Accents on each point of the crown and then draw a heart with your glossy accents in the middle of the crown. Take your super fine glitter and shake over the top of your dots and heart. Set aside to dry (don’t press down on your Glossy Accents).

Using the fluid chalks color the top of a manila shipping tag or you can choose to cover it with a pretty scrapbook paper. If you cover it with scrapbook paper remember to punch out the hole at the top for fibers to go through. Be sure to cover both sides with either inking or paper.

Use your glue gun to place a bead of glue around the edge of your heart, place a few dots in the center and then place it on the tag and press down. Once the crown is dry, shake off the excess glitter and then determine where the crown will be positioned on the heart. Use hot glue to adhere it.

Add your fibers and your Queen of hearts tag is completed.

I turned the chipboard sideways and went to work.

Adhere the image to the chipboard with glue stick, cut around the edges and then take a light sandpaper to remove any of the paper that remains in the little nooks and crannies.

Use fluid chalks to add color and edging to the piece. Cover the back of the chipboard with a vintage paper or scrapbook paper or even another image.

Punch a hole through the top of the chipboard using a Crop-O-Dile or regular hole punch. Feed your ribbon through to hang.

Place a large dot of glue at the bottom of the tag and then press the ribbon into place.

I chose two images from the image sheet and after determining the proper placement glued them together, back to back, using my glue stick.

I aged and colored the chipboard using fluid chalks as well as a bit of the fine glitter.

The images there sandwiched between the two chipboard pieces and the pieces were glued together using glue stick. This was set aside to dry.

Once dry I punched a hole at the top of the chipboard for the hanger to go through. Then I placed that piece on a flat protected surface and I filled in over the image using the Glossy Accents Crackle medium. Allow this to completely dry before flipping it over and filling in over the image that is showing through on the other side.

Once both sides are dry I place the hanger and then using hot glue I attach the pieces of trim at the bottom of the tags.

All of these tags are super easy and they made great additions to any gifts you may be giving, as ornaments hung from a seasonal tree, or just adorning an armoire door or lamp switch. I hope you enjoy working with these beautiful images…they are stunning!!!

Sweet Little Valentine Wall Hanging

Here is a sweet little Valentine wall hanging I made. I used a wooden heart that was already painted red that I had bought a couple of years ago at one of the craft stores. It is actually one heart off of a wall hanging that had about 8 wooden hearts in different sizes that are various shades of red and pink.

I cut a piece of tea stained cheesecloth to fit on the heart and glued it down with gel medium. Then I cut a piece of vintage music sheet a tad smaller then the cheesecloth so the edges of cheesecloth could peek out. Before gluing the music sheet down I distressed the edges of the heart with distress ink.

The little girl image is Paper Imagery Designs sheet Mary Beth 232.

I embossed the wings on the paper heart using black embossing powder and glued Mary Beth down over them. I stamped out the words BE MINE on one of those tape label makers and clipped them apart and stuck them down above the image of Mary Beth.

I used a couple of plastic gems to embellish the heart and tied a bow on the hanger.

I would like to first thank all of those who sent in applications to be on our DT but we cannot except them all. We had over 30 artists apply that I had to review and look over and pick through. It was a fun job to see all the ART but not so fun to pick out and leave behind.

Without further ado and in no order our 2011 Design Team is:

Arlene Mobley, Lesley Venable, and Kimberly Moore!! All three of these ladies do some AWESOME ART as you will see in the coming months!!

A little about each ARTIST:

Arlene Mobley- A mixed media artist and for the moment a stay at home mom. Loves getting her hands dirty with paint and sticky from glue and flour.

Kimberly Moore- is a mother of 2 who has dipped her fingers in many different forms of Arts and Crafting over the years. A self proclaimed hodgepodge artist she leaves no stone unturned when it comes to learning something new.

Lesley Venable- is a self taught mixed media, collage, assemblage artist who lives in Roanoke, Virginia with her art husband and their family of fur babies.

Valentines Valentines and more Valentines !!!

Saint Valentine's Day (commonly shortened to Valentine's Day) is an annual commemoration held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). Modern Valentine's Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards. Hence my love of making Handmade Valentines!!

I have been working on my Valentines!! I love Valentine’s ART! It all fits together so perfectly. I made ATCs, Inchies and some Bottlecap Pins/Magnets!

Check out my Valentines Day ATCs they were so much fun to make.

The Love ATC uses images from Lovely Ladies, Valentine Inchies 833, Word sheet, Word Squares, Valentine Cards and some Red Trim. I also used some flourish stamps white pen, and of course my favorite product German glass glitter in PINK!
For the inchie glued onto the front of the ATC are my chipboard chunks, and Valentine Inchies 833. I stamped more flourishes on the cut out inchie and stamped BE MINE on the front along with more glitter !!

Love Me ATC uses images from Lovely Ladies, and Valentine Inchies 833, also some Pink German trim. I stamped a few flourishes on the edges of the ATC in black. I know I used a lot of flourishes but there's just something about Valentines and Flourishes that I like! For the inchie glued on again I used chipboard chunks and a Valentine Inchie along with more flourish and glitter in PINK!!

Valentine Inchies !!! I love inchies just as much as the next but Valentine Inchies are by far my favorite!!! They are so versatile and easy and fun to make. Most of my inchies are just bits of images from my collage sheets. Add to them some glitter, trim or a gold foil pen border and instant magic!!

Bottlecap Valentine ART what a fun way to make some one happy! Most of my bottlecap ART is sent to my youngest kids classes for teachers gifts! They love these little pins or magnets that I turn them into, lately I have been turning them into push pins for bulletin boards – those are a HIT!

PID 2011 Design Team Call

Paper Imagery Designs is on the look-out for 3 - 5 paper art design team members.

Please send in your art to be considered for the position.

We are looking for original ART using PIDs collage sheets and images. If you do not own any of our collage sheets that is fine also please submit your ART using vintage collage images.

Type of ART we are looking for is a large set of ATCs, mixed media ART, altered
art objects and or altering objects around the house. PID style is your style but
we do love our vintage ART that looks gorgeous with our images. We also love bright
ART that stands out in a crowd.Please be enthusiastic about your work, your artistic
abilities and about our products! Have the ability to use a variety of styles and
up-to-date techniques while including various mediums in your artwork.

How to apply:

Email your ART to pidinfo@paperimagerydesigns.com

Subject: Design Team

Please make your images appropriate in size if you must send more than one email label them 1, 2, 3 and so on.

Please also include a short bio about yourself and what experience you may have.

What to send (any of the items below)

-A set (4-6) of ATCs, all ATCs must be different and use different styles and or techniques to show your abilities of what you can do.
-A set (2-4) of 4x4's art cards
-Greeting cards YES send in a bunch (3) to show different types you can make using our images.
-PID also loves inchies please include some inchies in your packages so we can see your small ART
-Altered ART objects turn a piece of wood into something beautiful.

How to qualify: PID will be sending you your ART packages about every month (or as
often as needed) through digital email. A great printer is needed to print your collage
sheets out. PID uses a laser high quality printer.
Do you need a laser printer? NO but for transfers to work
properly it may be better. Ink jet printers of a higher quality will print nice but
transfers will not transfer as well.

Altered Cabinet Cards by Arlene Mobley

Glue copies of cabinet cards to a stiff cardboard. Distress edges with ink and a piece of sandpaper or an emory board.

“Lady of Nature”

For the heart and butterfly cabinet card I cut out a piece of paper and masked the image of the woman and stamped the entire background with a French text stamp. I then stamped with a butterfly stamp, bird stamp, flourish stamp and a mini heart stamp with staz on ink.

Once the ink was dried I used acrylic paint mixed with a little bit of acrylic glazing medium to color the background. Glazing medium makes the acrylic paint transparent so your stamped images will show through.

I used distress ink on the edges of the card. Use a charcoal pencil to outline the image of the woman, the heart, bird and butterfly stamped images to make them stand out from the background. To finish it off I went around the edge of the card with the charcoal pencil and smudged.

“Mr Steam-Punk Card”

I gave the black and white image a wash of gold acrylic paint to give it an antique look.
I then colored the black and white image of the man using acrylic paint and distress ink.
I stamped a stop watch on the background and glued steam punk like images on the card. The Victorian shoe was colored with distress ink and hung from the bottom with an eyelet.

“Bad Girl”

I think this one is my favorite of the set. I am not sure if the image is of a boy or girl. It is so hard to tell sometimes with the style in the Victorian era of dressing little boys in dresses. Either way I got a female vibe and that is what I went with.

The background was very dark so using white chalk ink I stamped a postmark and flourish around the edges of the image.

I painted her dress with watered down gesso and then went over that with some peach colored acrylic paint. Once the paint was dry I went around the edges of the dress with a sepia colored gel pen.

Her hat was cut from a piece of scrapbook paper and mounted on card stock.

I cut little strips of scrapbook paper in complimentary colors and glued it along the edges of the image. I stamped a small flower trio around the frame. I added dots with white paint and went around the edges of the scrapbook paper with a charcoal pencil and smudged.

The little sentence along the bottom was cut from an old work book and was the inspiration for the bad girl them.

Technique Tuesday - Stamped Frame

Welcome to Technique Tuesday! Today I'd like to share with you a very simple masking technique that will quickly create a beautiful frame for your favorite images.
I'm using it for Christmas cards, but by changing the stamps you select, you can use this method for any holiday or occasion.
This is what I gathered together:

white cardstock cut to slightly smaller than your card front, repositionable adhesive, oval cut from scrap paper, rubber stamps of holly, pine needles, etc., various shades of green ink, red stickles or other glitter glue

Apply a dot of the repositionable adhesive to the center of the white cardstock

Place the oval on the adhesive

Stamp around the oval mask, overlapping, using the different

stamps and green inks

Remove the mask

Finish the frame with some dots of red stickles to form berries.

You can also use a decorative corner punch as I did.

Cut your favorite images into ovals (slightly smaller than the frame oval) and adhere them to the center. Mount your frame on the front

of a red card blank. Here are some samples:

Technique Tuesday - Faux Leafing

Welcome to Technique Tuesday. It's been a while since I've posted, but while I've been gone I've taken many classes and workshops, and have lots of new techniques to share.
Today's is one I've been meaning to show you for some time, and was reminded of it in a workshop I took last weekend with Lynne Perrella, a wonderful mixed media collage artist. It is a way to add the look of gold or silver leaf to your project in a fast, easy, and inexpensive way.
Here is what you'll need:

joss paper (you can find it online or if you have a Chinatown

where you live in most any gift shop there), rubber cement,

paper, and a burnishing tool (I have one that came with a

set of rub-ons, but you can use the back of a spoon)

Apply some rubber cement to the paper wherever you

want the leafing. You can do it randomly as I did here, or even

create a pattern by using a stencil:

You must wait for the rubber cement to dry completely.

Then place the "metallic" part of the joss paper face down over

the dried rubber cement and gently burnish. The gold or silver

"leaf" transfers easily to the paper.

I cut the leafed paper into smaller pieces and used it to form a mosaic background for this notecard:

All of the added images are on PID sheet #720. I realize that most of you probably do not have joss paper in your stash (but you just might have some and didn't know what to do with it), but as I said before, it is not that difficult to find. And this is a wonderful technique to add to your arsenal.

Technique Tuesday - Fusible Web Background

I have to admit that this came about when I couldn't find my stash of used dryer sheets. While tearing apart the studio, I did come across a package of fusible web....the stuff that is used to bond fabric to fabric. It looks a lot like a dryer sheet, and I know that it melts, so I thought it would work on the project I had in mind.....and it did!

Materials Used:

light colored cardstock
piece of fusible web, same size as cardstock
colorant in spray form (I used Adirondack Color Wash)
embossing powder in contrasting color
heat tool
protective cover for your work surface

First of all, just attach the web to the cardstock with a few little dots of adhesive (tape works best). You don't have to worry about getting it all adhered.....that will happen later.....you just want to keep in in position.

Spray with color:

Sprinkle with embossing powder. Use as much or little as you like. Since I am doing this background for our orange and black challenge, I'm using black embossing powder over my orange colored fusible web.

Try to avoid big blobs of embossing powder (but if you get them you can remedy that with a brush). You can even try for a design if you have a steady hand, but I was just going for an abstract look. Next step, heat set the powder with your heat tool. Not only will the embossing powder melt, but the fusible web will melt into the cardstock as well. You can even create some holes deliberately by holding the tool over one area for a while. This is one of those techniques that invites some experimenting. It doesn't show up that well in photos, but the resulting texture is amazing!

As I said, I used some of this as the background for my entry in our orange and black challenge (click HERE see yesterday's post by Angie). I made this tag:

The adorable Halloween-dressed kewpie can be found on sheet #695. The tickets I used as a border are on sheet #799, and the witch in the crystal ball is on sheet #801. I finished the tag with words made with my good old Dymo label maker.

Technique Tuesday - Faux Colored Core Paper

I love that cardstock (that I won't name by brand) that has one color on the outside and another at the core. When you emboss with it and sand down the raised areas, the inner color is exposed. Great effect. Not everyone has this paper, and sometimes you want a very specific color combination, so I decided to try my hand at creating a faux colored core paper.

You'll need cardstock in the color you want for your "core," paint for your outer color, a brush, an embossing folder (and a machine for embossing, of course), and a sanding tool (sanding block, file, emery board....whatever you like to use).

Cover the cardstock with your paint and let it dry completely. Remember that the thicker you apply the paint the more sanding you will have to do later on.

When the paint is dry, place the cardstock in the embossing folder and run it through your machine.

Now it's time to sand.....remove as much or as little of the paint as you want.

I really think it closely resembles that pricey cardstock I was talking about, and it was done with supplies most of us already have at hand.

I used this background for my Halloween tag for the current challenge. The theme is "charmed, I'm sure," and instead of making a piece of jewelry, I used my bottlecap charm to embellish the tag.

The PID shop has tons of great Halloween images, and I used some from sheets #797, 798, and 799.

Altered Bottles by Eileen Bellomo

The miniature bottles lend themselves to many uses after being altered. Of course you can just do a collection for display purposes only, but I think their size makes them perfect for jewelry.

Halloween Necklace or Garland

I covered the bottles with images from some of the new PID Halloween sheets. I made a loop from some jewelry wire and inserted it into the cork with a dab of glue, then attached each bottle to a length of ribbon, adding some additional Halloween ribbons.

If you don’t see yourself actually wearing this piece, it also makes a great garland to decorate your place for Halloween. Here are some close-ups of the bottles:

This one has a fastener on the top and is meant to be a charm. Add it to a favorite bracelet or necklace:

After decorating the outside, I filled the bottle with some orange glitter, and glued the purple button (with fastener already attached) to the cork.

Steampunk is a popular style these days, and any bottle can be transformed into this look by adding a few bits of the right hardware. The bottle containing watch parts is the focal point of this steampunk-inspired bracelet I made:

The charms are covered with papers from PID sheet #783.

I have one more altered bottle to show you.....maybe not technically Halloween or Steampunk related, but somehow, Alice’s adventures rival most Halloween stories, don’t you think? Besides, bottles played a big part in some of her scarier escapades.

Spooky, Scary, Dark or Dreary

Time for a new jackpot theme. Yes, it is September! Can't believe the summer is almost over (though you can't tell from the recent temperatures...yikes!), so it is time to be thinking about some Halloween art.
But first......the winner of the August jackpot is......Renee Mauz. Congratulations, Renee! I hope you enjoy the pieces you'll soon be receiving.
Now, as for the new theme.....I'm calling it "Spooky, Scary, Dark or Dreary." Make some Halloween art....make it fun and light hearted, make it gloomy and mysterious, make it shocking....make whatever you like, however you like, just remember our rules.....this is a PID event, so make sure your work contains at least one PID image.

I did a little collage of some of my favorite PID Halloween images. And that's a real bottle cap with the cool Mona image inside.

I even decorated the bottom:

And the inside is done with some papers received in our Halloween scary goodie bag. You might not get the exact same papers, but you'll get a great selection of paper and other great embellishments if you order one.

Technique Tuesday - Melted Crayon Backgrounds

Welcome to Technique Tuesday! My good friend and fellow design teammate here at Paper Imagery Designs, Angie, introduced me to making crayon paper with used dryer sheets. I spent some time this week using her melting technique on a variety of papers, and this is too much fun not to share with everyone!
This is what you'll need to get started:

crayons, a heat-resistant craft mat, a craft iron (or a travel iron without steam holes or a regular iron with the plate covered with aluminum foil), paper towels, a variety of papers to experiment with

The basic procedure, regardless of the paper you are using, is to melt crayons (one or several colors at a time) directly on the iron and then transfer them onto paper.

transfer (wiggle the iron around for some cool effects)

If you need to clean the iron before using a new color, just iron on a piece of paper towel.

If you want to add a specific color to a specific part of the paper you can also apply the crayon directly to the paper and iron over it.

Just keep melting crayons and transferring them onto paper until you're satisfied.

Technique Tuesday - Salted Backgrounds

I first used this technique many years ago when I was learning how to paint on silk. I decided to see if it would work on paper, and it does and I think it looks great!

You'll need paper, of course. I used watercolor paper because I love the texture and it stands up so well to wet techniques. But there is no reason why you can't use regular cardstock, grungepaper, chipboard, or whatever else you have. Just be aware of how your choice reacts with water.

Next, you'll need to color your paper, and you have to choose a medium that stays wet for a while. I experimented with colorwash, glimmer mist, homemade mica spray, and pigment ink sprayed with water.

Then, the salt.....since I had all three in the house, I tried table salt, kosher salt (much coarser than table salt) and sea salt (about as coarse as kosher salt, but the grains are not as evenly sized). I didn't see a big difference between the sea salt and kosher salt, but liked both better than the table salt.

The technique couldn't be easier. Color the paper. In the photo above, I used terra cotta colorwash (a Ranger product). Sprinkle the paper with the salt and then LEAVE IT ALONE to dry.

When the paper is dry, use a piece of paper towel to rub off the salt. It leaves behind a beautiful, pitted background. Here are some of my results:

Glimmer Mist and table salt

Homemade mica spray and kosher salt

Pigment ink, rubbed on the paper then sprayed with water and sea salt

Color wash and a combination of all three salts

I used one sheet as the background for a birthday card I made for this week's "fabulous florals" challenge. Another sheet became the flower I made to embellish the card. The queen, of course, is Marie Antoinette, and Paper Imagery Designs has a TON of fabulous Marie images for you to use in your art. I used one from sheet #734.

Marie Antoinette By Eileen Bellomo

I love making art with Marie Antoinette images, and have several projects to share with you.
Fabric Wall Hanging

Marie is from PID collage sheet #685, and I did a gel transfer onto fabric. Here is a close up of the transferred image:

How to make a gel transfer:
Cover the image with an even coat of gel medium, lay it face down on plain white fabric (cotton works best), burnish it well with a brayer or the back of a spoon, and set it aside to dry overnight. Then wet the back and gently rub the white paper off with your finger. Repeat until all the white paper has been removed.
I invaded my fabric scrap pile and put together some layers of fabric and lace, with the transferred image as the focal point. It is all stitched together, but if you don’t like to sew, everything I did with needle and thread could be done with a fabric-safe adhesive. Finish it off with some bling and flowers.
Marie Bracelet

The base of the bracelet is a tube of fabric, about an inch shorter than the length you want the finished bracelet to be. I sewed on some ribbon and fibers, then added some beads. The image of Marie is from PID inchie sheet #637. I placed it in a frame, covered it with some crackle accents to give it an aged look, and attached it to the center of the bracelet. The toggle closure was also sewn onto the fabric.

Technique Tuesday - Gesso Transfer

The new challenge theme is "fabric," and I decided to try a new (for me) technique for transferring one of PID's lovely images onto some fabric.
I love the look of transfers and though I've had mixed results with them, I have made it my mission to master the many transfer techniques there are to choose from. This one turned out well, so I'm happy to share it with you. This is what you need to gather together:

white gesso
light colored fabric (plain or very lightly patterned)
the PID image of your choice
a brush
(not shown) a spoon or bone folder or other burnishing device

Apply a coat of gesso to both the image and the area of the fabric where you want the transfer.

While both are still wet, press the image onto the gessoed fabric. Using your burnishing tool, really work the image onto the fabric. Start from the center and burnish outward. Make sure it is well adhered with no edges peeling up.

Now comes the hardest part.....you have to set this aside and allow it to dry completely. I just put it away to dry overnight and went on to other things. Now that I think about it, I'm sure my past failures with transfers happened because I was in a rush and didn't allow for ample drying time.

Okay, so it's the next day.....bring your piece of fabric to the sink and holding it under water, with the paper facing you, begin to GENTLY rub the paper off the fabric.

Let the fabric dry. If after drying you still see some of the white paper, just repeat the prior step. Always rub gently. Some of the image might come off, but I think that just adds to the vintage look.

I attached my fabric transfer onto some other fabric (and some colored paper towel!) with machine stitching and then used this to cover and completely alter a mini notebook.

Technique Tuesday - Embossing With Sticker Paper and A Mask

Welcome to Technique Tuesday! Today we're going to create a beautiful embossed background right on sticker paper. Usually we use pigment ink when we use embossing powder, but actually anything that the embossing powder will adhere to works....which is where the sticker paper comes in.
(***TIP Many craft stores sell sticker paper, but you can just go to the office supply store and go to the label section. Get the kind that will create a full-sized 8 1/2 x 11" label. That's all that sticker paper really is!)
Here is what you'll need:

sticker paper, two contrasting colors of embossing powder, a mask and a heat tool (the dark blue paper is just there so you can see the mask better)

Lay the paper on your work surface and remove the protective backing so it is sticky side up.

Place your mask where you want it on the paper. (You can use a purchased mask or create your own, which is what I did, using my Big Kick, a piece of acetate, and an Eiffel Tower die).

Sprinkle the color of embossing powder that will be in the background all over the sticker paper, and tap off the excess.

Slowly remove the mask. (You might find using a tweezers to grab a corner helpful).

Heat the embossing powder with your heat tool until it melts.

***IMPORTANT NOTE*** You MUST remove the mask before you use the heat tool, or it will most likely melt right along with the embossing powder. Heat tools get very very hot!

Now, you have to wait until your piece cools off completely. When it has, sprinkle your second color of embossing powder over top, making sure all of the masked section is covered. Tap off the excess and emboss again with the heat tool. (If you don't wait for the first embossing to cool, your second color will stick to the first.....big mess!)

That's all there is to it! Easy and it makes for a unique and (I think) striking background. I used mine to complete the new challenge -- postcard art. If Alice's adventures took her to Paris, this might be what she sent home....

What’s New at the Shoppe at PID

Well its the 4th of July already! Guess what that means only 9 more weeks until school starts back up again!!

This summer we have had some wild things happening… we had an earthquake aftershock all the way from Ottawa it was a 5.5 on the scale and the big ol town of Springville felt it. We had tornadoes touch down, wild rain and massive heat waves!! Can it get any better or worse?

Technique Tuesday - Metal Embossing (If You Don't Have Metal)

Welcome to Technique Tuesday!
If you have a Cuttlebug or Big Shot, if you have an embossing folder or texture plate, if you have embossing tools, metal embossing is easy. You don't even need fancy craft store metal; you can cut up a soda can and use that.
But, I know many of you are just starting out and might not have many tools or machines. I believe there's always a way to at least get the look of something, even if you lack the traditional supplies.
Well, you do of course need some materials:

I've used a piece of heavy duty aluminum foil, double sided tape, glue, a piece of scrap cardboard, a chipboard shape (you can also use chipboard letters) scissors, and a paper stump. The stump is the two ended tool that looks like a giant white crayon. You can find it in most art supply or craft stores. But if you don't have one or can't get one, wrap a bit of soft fabric around the end of a tapered object like a ball point pen (with point retracted), fasten with a rubber band and use that. You'll see what I mean as this tutorial continues. I think a bone folder might work too.

Glue the chipboard to the cardboard.

Cover the cardboard....on the side with the chipboard shape.....with the double sided tape. Remove the protective layer and attach the aluminum foil right over the cardboard and chipboard. This is what it looks like on the back:

Trim away excess foil, leaving about 1/2" all around. Also trip the corners and apply glue around the edges of the cardboard:

Fold the aluminum foil up over the glue and press down gently. Now, flip the piece over to the side covered with the aluminum foil, and with your finger gently rub until you can see the outline of the chipboard taking shape.

Remember, this is just foil, so do be gentle so it doesn't rip. Now, get your paper stump (or the substitute I described) and go around the image, refining it further. You should get pretty good detail.

You can remove some of the wrinkles around the image by using the side of the stump instead of the point (or try a bone folder):

If you take a ballpoint pen with the point retracted, and work gently, you can create some texture without ripping the foil. See the cross hatching and dots I've made this way:

You can leave your embossed metal as is:

Or give it an antique look by applying some black permanent ink or acrylic paint. Dab on, wipe off:

My plan was to use this piece on a greeting card, which I did, but at the last minute decided to cut around the butterfly and discard the background. Well, sometimes plans change, and I believe in going with the flow.

So, here are two views of my finished card. I continued the butterfly theme with some beautiful images from PID sheet #717, one of my favorites.

Technique Tuesday - Faux Postage

Welcome to Technique Tuesday! The weekly challenge is faux postage, and today I'm going to show you two easy ways to turn your favorite image into a faux postage stamp.

For version one, you'll start with a scrap of cardstock or light weight cardboard, a ruler, a pencil, small sharp scissors and a pair of decorative scissors with an edge that resembles the zig zag look of old fashioned postage stamps.

First, draw the shape (square or rectangle) you want for your stamp on the scrap.

Then, using the point of the sharp scissors, poke a hole in the center and then cut from that point to each corner.

You will now be able to fit the decorative scissors inside the shape and cut around, following the lines you drew.

You now have a stencil that can be used again and again.

To create your stamp, you'll need an ink pad and a cosmetic sponge or ink blending tool.

Place the stencil where you want the stamp on your work, and using the sponge, dab the ink to cover, making sure that you're getting the edges (the center won't show anyway).

Now get the image you want to use and cut it so that it is slightly smaller than your stencil.

For greater realism, you can add the value of your postage.

I thought it would be fun to make some pin-up postage stamps, and the PID shop has lots to choose from. This one is from sheet #780.

Here is how it looks on my finished piece, a postcard:

I did a second stamp in a different size (the caged bird is also on that sheet), and finished my postcard collage with images from sheet #627 (Paris).

Here I've done a whole page of stamps:

Aren't they fun? What I like about this technique is that once you've made your stencil, you can use it again and again. So make a few in a variety of sizes.

Another way to get the same effect is to simply cut a square or rectangle from a piece of paper with the decorative edge scissors, and then cut your selected image slightly smaller, using the regular edge scissors.

Now glue them together.

This version of the technique is great to use if you want to attach a faux stamp somewhere you can't fit a stencil. There are other ways to achieve this look, but these two are, in my opinion, the easiest....unless of course, you're lucky enough to own a postage stamp punch or die.

4x4 ART Card

After the kids went to bed I had to ART it up :D. I worked on a 4x4 ART Card!

For the base I used a 4x4 chipboard and cut out a piece of 4x4 pattern cardstock. I glued down one of the Birdcage SVG files and some eggs and a mushroom in the background. Every fairy needs some glass glitter and Avery is the perfect fairy. Ok all my art uses glitter :D but ya know I love glass glitter. I flattened a bottle cap and placed in there a word square and a little lady bug to the bottom of the cage. For the crown and wand I used an SVG file and then sprinkled with glitter and some alcohol inks and glue. Oops almost forgot some pink German trim. TFL!!

Technique Tuesday - Rubber Cement Resist

Welcome to Technique Tuesday! Today we'll be using a very old office supply item -- rubber cement -- to create some really unique backgrounds. This is what you'll need to get started:

light colored cardstock
rubber cement
2-3 colors of ink
blending tool or cosmetic sponge
rubber stamp(s) with bold images (not detailed)

Since this week's challenge theme is "stars and stripes" I began by painting some stripes with the rubber cement.

I'm going for a rustic, vintage look in my finished project, so I wasn't trying for precision. You can use a small paintbrush instead of the larger one that comes with the rubber cement if you want narrower or more even lines. Now you have to wait for the rubber cement to dry completely. When it is, using the lightest color ink and the blending tool, cover the entire paper.

See how the rubber cement resists the ink. Now, using your finger, remove the dried rubber cement by rubbing gently.

As long as the rubber cement is really dry, it will come off easily. So much for the stripes, now on to the stars. Apply a light coating of rubber cement to the stamp and stamp wherever you like, going right over the stripes.

Again, you must wait until the cement has totally dried. Then, using the next darker color of ink and the blending tool, cover the entire paper again.

Remove the rubber cement with your finger. You can stop at this point or, using the darkest color ink and a complementary rubber stamp (in this case, a smaller star), continue the design. (Remove the rubber cement from the stamp the same way, by rubbing with your finger. It will come off and won't harm your stamp. Just be aware that it comes off most easily when the rubber cement is completely dry.)

I used this background to cover a mini notebook for the "stars and stripes" challenge:

The lovely lady is Delilah, and she can be found on PID sheet #705. I added some ribbon on the side, a rub-on sentiment and a closure with star charms to finish the book cover.

I also tried the rubber cement resist technique on glossy cardstock and used more vibrant colors. Wouldn't this be great as the background for a patriotic piece:

Altered Matchbox Tutorial/Swap

Eileen has created some great inspiration amongst us all with her Matchbox!! So to get us all into the Matchbox craze how’s about a SWAP?!
Step 1:
Cut your matchbox out by using your SCAL or scissors, next score along the lines and fold them in.

Step 2:
Glue along the gray areas and fold together. Glue on the inside some coordinating cardstock the size of about 2.5x1.5

Step 3:
Alter up your matchbox! I cut out a butterfly and glued down using some of my little mushrooms as the antenna for the butterfly.
I then altered up a flattened bottle cap cut out Word Squares and glued in with glossy accents and a coat of PPA (perfect paper adhesive).
For the bead (great yard sale find) on the front I poked a hole in the tray and placed some wire in and reinforced with glossy accents. My beads inside are from yet another great yard sale find :D

Technique Tuesday - Melted Crayon Embellishments

Welcome to Technique Tuesday. Today's project is low cost, low tech, and gives you another great use for your iron. All you need

is an iron, some crayon pieces, a craft knife (or any old knife you're no longer using for cutting food), a piece of wax paper, and something to protect your work surface (I use a non-stick, heat resistant craft mat).

Fold a piece of wax paper in half, and using the edge of the craft knife, start shaving the crayon onto one side of the wax paper.

You can do a color mix or stick to one or two colors, or even several shades of the same color. You don't need to cover the wax paper completely; the crayon shavings will spread as they melt. About this much is fine:

Now close up the wax paper on the fold, sandwiching the crayon shavings inside.

Place the wax paper on your protected work surface (if you don't have a craft mat, you can use an old towel), and then put a piece of paper towel or copy paper over the wax paper. This is to protect your iron, and you could also just cover the iron with aluminum foil.

Using a medium high setting (no steam), begin ironing.

It won't take long for the crayons to melt. Keep lifting the paper to check the progress. Not quite there:

Not only have the crayons melted, but they have fused to both sides of the wax paper. Some of the crayons have also melted onto the paper towel I had covering the wax paper...an added bonus, and I'll save it and use it in a future project:

But, back to the melted crayon wax paper. Since it is all fused together in one piece, I can cut it to create some cool embellishments. I took a piece I made with green and yellow crayons, and used a punch to cut out the bird, and a die to cut the flowers:

These melted crayon pieces are translucent. You can still see the text under the flowers:

Which means that light shines through them, which makes them perfect for a stained glass look. Here, I used dies with lots of cut outs, and cut them with black cardstock. I glued some of the melted crayon wax paper on the back:

Very pretty! If you don't have any dies with cut outs you can get the same effect by using some small punches on black paper, or even free hand cutting with scissors.

For this week's challenge, "In The Garden," I used the wings I made and created this garden button fairy:

The little doll head looks like the real thing, but it is actually from one of the PID doll sheets, and I think it is just perfect for the project.

I happen to have a die to cut the matchbox, but before I did, I made them from a template. Not at all difficult to do, and they make perfect gift boxes for a small trinket or a pair of earrings. You can even make a lot of them and stack them to form a curio cabinet. PID has a SCAL file of a regular matchbox and an envelope matchbox.

I cut the matchbox from a sturdy textured cardstock. The belly band is from PID sheet #732 ("Eileen's Backs" -- yes, that's me!). I used one of the beautiful and colorful Marie Antoinette images on PID sheet #734, then just added a little tag with a stamped sentiment and some paper flowers.

A Tim Holtz hitch fastener opens the box. Here's a view of that:

And I lined the inside with another pattern from sheet #732.

Inside the box, a little charm.

I attached another Marie image, this one from a sheet of charm sized pictures (PID sheet #731), to a Charm blank, added some Stickles and Glossy Accents, a length of Ribbon, and voila! Instant jewelry.

Although you can buy unfinished tins in many shapes and sizes, it is much more gratifying to take one that once held something and alter it. PID also has some Tiny Metal Boxes you can use. These days many scrapbooking supplies come in Tin , and of course tins also contain cough drops, sucking candies, bandages, and more.

I had this tin that was originally full of some chipboard shapes, and I wanted to transform it into a keepsake container for a dear friend.

First I covered all the metal with Alcohol Ink .

Next, I cut some pretty paper to fit inside the tin. This is from a wallpaper sample book, but scrapbook paper or gift wrap would be great also.

Then I started to decorate the lid, which has an acetate panel. I glued some of my own background paper so it showed through the acetate and trimmed around it with a border of German scrap, available at the PID shop. I added my favorite PID images (Pretty Women), a flower I made (the gold rose center can also be found in the shop), a rub-on sentiment on top of the acetate, and some letters to finish it off. Quite a transformation, I think.

From Book to Shrine Part 1

This is an easy way to create a shrine for your art and recycle at the same time. You'll need an old book, the size you'd like your shrine to be. Libraries and flea markets are a good inexpensive source.

You'll also need some Adhesive, Paint Brushes, and Clamps (If you don't have clamps, Binder Clips, will work if your book isn't too thick.

Rubber Bands will also do the trick.

Brush the glue, a nice thick coat around all edges of the book.

Attach the clamps, binder clips, or hold closed with the rubber bands, and wait until the glue is completely dry.

The book is now completely closed up and ready to be altered and turned into a shrine. Now you'll need a Ruler and a Craft Knife with a sharp blade. You'll probably have to change blades several times. The sharper the blade, the easier this will be.

Pencil in lines where you want the niche for your shrine to be. Holding the metal ruler steady with one hand, begin cutting on the lines with your craft knife. I couldn't take the photos and hold the ruler and the knife, but you'll need to hold the ruler very steady.

It will take several passes with the knife, but you'll cut the cover out and see the book's pages revealed.

Now, start ripping out the pages until your niche is as deep as you'd like it to be. You'll have to occasionally cut through the pages again with your craft knife.

When your niche is to your liking, cover EVERYTHING (revealed page, cover, spine, book edges) with Gesso.

Set the book aside to dry. Now for the fun part.....gather materials for decorating your shrine.

I used Acrylic Paint, Crackle Medium, fabric, flowers, Decorative Paper , and some of my favorite PID images.

Technique Tuesday - Crumbled Magazine Background

Welcome to Technique Tuesday! I think today's technique might be the simplest one I've shown you...and yet, the result is striking. On top of that, you'll have the satisfaction of recycling. Believe it or not, this is all you need:

an ink pad (your color choice, but I chose a brown for a vintage look)
glossy magazine pages

Outdoor scenes or florals are very nice, but this technique will work with advertising pages as well. Also, try it with just text for another look. But, I'm getting ahead of myself. First, take the page you're using and crumble it up into a ball. Really crumble it well.

Now open it up.

Take the ink pad and rub it all over the page. The wrinkled areas will take on most of the ink. Much of the original graphic will be covered with ink, transforming it totally.

**Note: because the paper is glossy, the ink won't dry right away. Wait for it to air dry, dry it with a heat tool, or even blot it with some paper towel. Just be aware that it remains wet a bit longer, so you don't get ink all over yourself.**
Now, choose the area you want to use in your project and trim to size. I'm doing a 4x4 coaster, and here is what my background looks like:

I also cut some to ATC size for future use.

Here's a tip for finding the best area of a large background sheet to use in your project. I have frames I cut from scrap cardboard (cereal boxes mostly) in the sizes I most often use (ATC, coaster, jumbo ATC, etc.)

Just hold the frame over the background and move it around until you like what you see inside. Then you know where to trim.

This week's challenge is "Celebrate A Dad," and here is my finished piece, a vintage style tribute to a father.

I think my crumbled magazine background is perfect for this piece. The very serious looking gentleman is from PID sheet #289.

Technique Tuesday - More About Bleach

Welcome to Technique Tuesday. Last week I demonstrated using bleach as a stamping medium. I hope you didn't stow your bleach away just yet, because today we're going to "paint" with it! My finished piece is for the weekly PID challenge, and the current theme is "The Colors of Summer." So I grabbed some tropical, citrusy colors, but you can go ahead and use whatever colors you want. Here's what I used:

colored cardstock
clear embossing ink
colored embossing powders
rubber stamp with areas that are outlined. Florals are a good choice,
small paintbrush
bleach and small container
heat tool
protected work surface

Stamp your image with the clear ink, cover with colored embossing powder, and set with your heat tool.

By using the embossing powder, you have created areas that are surrounded by embossing (the reason you want to use stamps with areas that are outlined), which will act as a barrier for the bleach and keep it from spreading into the background.

Dip the tip of the paintbrush into the bleach and "color" in the outlined areas....all of them, or just some.

If you tried to do this without first embossing your image, you can see how the bleach would spread everywhere. As I mentioned last time, you just never know when working with bleach just how the cardstock will react. This is how the above image looked after the bleach fully dried:

Now here are a few more samples I did. The first photo will show the stamped and embossed image, followed by the same image after painting with bleach:

The pin-up girls on PID sheet #760 are just so perfect for summer-themed projects. I perched this one on a rubber stamped image of a martini, and made the title with a label maker. Fun!

Try this technique on a variety of colors and textures of cardstock and you'll always be surprised!

Just remember, when working with bleach, go outdoors or open a window!

Technique Tuesday - Stamping With Bleach

Welcome to Technique Tuesday! Today we're raiding the cleaning supplies again for another oldie but goodie...stamping with bleach. One of the coolest things about this technique is that you can never be sure of the outcome, even within one sheet of paper, which makes it interesting and a whole lot of fun. Gather together:

protection for your work surface
a shallow container (I used the lid of disposable container when I couldn't find one shallow enough)
bleach
several colors of cardstock (dark for the most dramatic effect)
paper towels
a non-detailed rubber stamp (also called a silhouette stamp)

Work in a well ventilated area. Fold several layers of paper towels to create a pad and place in the container. Wet thoroughly with bleach, but there is no need to over saturate the paper.

Press the stamp onto the bleach pad. Experiment with how hard you press....you will get different results using a heavier or lighter touch.

Now stamp onto the cardstock. Repeat as desired. Try stamping a second time without reapplying the bleach. As with stamping with ink, your second impression will look different than the first. Here are some examples of how my bleach stamping turned out on different colors of cardstock. You might think the bleached area always turns white....it doesn't, and the results might surprise you.

Stop now, or repeat with a different stamp:

Very interesting backgrounds as is, or you can add back some color to the bleached areas using chalks, inks, or colored pencils:

Remember to wash the bleach off your stamps. I used one of my backgrounds to cover a tag, and then used the tag in this week's challenge at PID. The theme is "My Favorite Escape," and for me, that has always been reading. Books are like magic to me, in that they can take you places without ever leaving your home. That thought inspired this:

I found the magician's assistant on PID sheet #723(Pin Up Girls Having Fun), and perched her on top of a stack of books (sheet #649). I put another book in one hand, and coming out of the hat she holds in the other hand, a spring made of jewelry wire, which holds yet another book. I added the text with a label maker.

First I want to thank everyone for their congratulations and well wishes on the birth of my newest granddaughter Addison. Addison is doing very well and will have surgery for her heart defects when she is between 4 and 6 months old. Thank you for all the prayers. She is doing much better then even the doctors expected.

With all that has been going on I haven't had much time to do any art work. And it has been driving me crazy as most of you can understand I am sure.

When Angie posted the Wear Me Challenge on the yahoo group last week I knew I wanted to use the Vintage Shoe Sheet # 766 .

The shoe images are so Marie Antoinette and I knew I wanted to use the image in a fabric piece. Now of course the shoe image is from a sheet of paper images and if you have been reading the PID blog at all you will have seen that I use these image sheets in a lot of fabric art. The quality of the laser sheets are excellent and you can convert any of the images into a fabric transfer with no problem. Trust me.......Even if you have never been able to do a fabric transfer before in your life you will be able to do a transfer with a PID image, Golden Soft Gel and a piece of fabric.

My art quilt is 5 x 7 and I start with a muslin base and add layers of fabric, lace and trims. Once I have my base sewn together and am happy with the placement of the focal image I will then sew on beads and some embellishments. Once the front is finished I then add a fabric backing with fusible webbing. Then a simple straight stich or a decorative stitch is sewn around the edges to finish it off.

Technique Tuesday - Paper Flowers

Welcome to Technique Tuesday! I'm sure you've noticed that flowers, always popular in design, are even more so lately. Flowers seem to be everywhere, in art, in fashion, in home decor, in jewelry. And they are made of everything from paper to metal to fabric, to leather....everything! Today I'll show you a few variations of a simple paper flower to enhance your projects. To start, you'll need:

thin paper, such as origami paper, old text, vellum, or parchment
a system for cutting different sized circles (shown are punches and a die), or you can cut them freehand

Each flower will use four circles in different sizes. You will also need:

a quick drying glue, like Glossy Accents or Zip Dry
optional elements for decorating the flowers, such as:

ink and rubber stamps
clear ink, embossing powder and heat tool
glitter glue
jewels, pearls or other bling for flower centers

Here are the basic directions for the flower. After cutting the circles, decorate as you desire (more on that later), then crinkle up each circle.

Put a dot of glue in the center of the largest circle.

Attach the next largest circle.

Repeat with the next two circles, ending with the smallest. Using this simple technique you can create a lot of different looks.

In this example, a decorative stamp was stamped with clear embossing ink on vellum circles. Gold embossing powder was added and set with a heat tool. Then the flower was assembled as per the above directions. A gold metal rose (available at the PID shop!) was added as the flower center:

This flower was made from old dictionary pages, and the edges of each circle were lined with Stickles.

This next flower was cut from pearlescent paper, stamped with a french script stamp, and the edges inked with deep red ink:

In the final example, patterned origami paper was used:

I thought about making flowers when I got my idea for this week's challenge at the PID yahoo group. The theme is "Wear Me" and I knew right away I wanted to make a hat. I created this design for a greeting or note card:

The lovely lady, one of my favorite images of all time, can be found on several PID collage sheets, and I used one from sheet #252. It is black and white, but I used some chalks to add some subtle color to her face and dress.
The hat was cut freehand from patterned paper. I wrapped it with a length of ribbon and then added the gold embossed vellum flower to finish it off. Along the left side of the card is a strip of German scrap, which I also found in the PID Shop.
Why not gather together some simple supplies and make yourself a bouquet of paper flowers!

I made some ATCs for a swap I am in over at Marie Antoinette Mail Art

The theme is Tea with Marie

Up first “Tea” I used Maries Tea, German Flowers and Pink Trim.

“Soup for the Soul” Again I used my Maries Tea sheet, Bird Cages, Mini Eggs, Word Sheet, Pink Trim and German Flowers.

“Beautiful” This ATC is super simple takes 5 minutes. Pink Trim, Roses, Word Sheet, Maries Tea and Grunge Marie
