Art Goddess Pins

One of the new collage sheets (#717) has a page full of images that are just perfect for the Art Goddess pins I love to make.  When I can find them, I use old rusted keys as the base, but when I don't have any of those (like right now), I use keys from Tim Holtz's idea-ology line.
Here are four that I made today:

I glued the images onto grungepaper for added strength and coated them with glossy accents to give them some shine and also protect them.  Then I attached them to the top of the keys with a strong adhesive (I used the glossy accents again for this).  The words "art goddess" were made with my Brother label maker.  Add a pin back and I'm sure any art goddess I know would be happy to wear one!

Technique Tuesday - Spray Starch and Mica Powder!

Welcome to Technique Tuesday! While surfing the internet I came across this technique.  I was getting it about third hand, so can't link to the originator, but do want to say that it was attributed to a crafter named Deb Lovett.  Credit where credit is due, you know!
Again, you have to raid your household supplies to get this done.  Love that!  Gather together the following:

  • craft mat or other protection for your work surface
  • spray starch
  • black cardstock
  • mica powder(s)  I used perfect pearls, but you can use any brand.  The spray starch acts as a binder so no protective coating is necessary!
  • a foam brush
Spray the starch generously over the cardstock.  Then sprinkle whatever colors of mica powder you like over top.  You can use one or more.  Since I'll be cutting the cardstock into different sizes for various projects, I used several colors in different places so I'd get some variety.  Do try not to put one color over another, however, as that can result in a muddy look.

Notice that I did not try to cover the entire piece of paper at this step.  Also, the big blog of turquoise on the bottom left was not planned......you need not use that much.  My hand slipped!
Now, take the foam brush and swirl the powder around.

You can blend the colors a bit or leave them separate....experiment!
Let the paper dry completely.  You can use a heat tool if you're impatient.
I cut the paper so I'd have backgrounds for ATCs, jumbo ATCs, and mats for greeting cards:

You can try this with cardstock colors other than black, but dark cardstock does give the most dramatic look.  Of course, the color(s) of mica powder you use will also have a huge impact on the final result.
Over at the PID Yahoo group, the weekly challenge theme is "green/clover," so I used one of my backgrounds as a base for a St. Patrick's Day card.  The little fellow is from sheet #479, and I sat him on top of a mushroom from sheet #626.

So, forget the ironing and use your spray starch to make art!

Technique Tuesday - Acrylics Over Text Background

Welcome to Technique Tuesday.  This week's challenge at the PID yahoo group inspired today's background.  Since text was to be included in the challenge art, I decided to use it in the background as well.  As is the case in most of my favorite techniques, this one is fast, easy, and uses supplies you most likely already have.
Gather together these materials:

  • craft sheet or other protection for your work surface
  • 2 - 4 colors of acrylic paint
  • an old credit/gift card
  • a page of text from a book or magazine
  • paper towel (for paint clean up)
  • (optional and not shown in photo) a sanding block
Pour a few drops of one or two colors right onto the page of text.  Don't use more than two at a time or the result might be muddy.

Using the credit card, scrape the colors onto the page to spread them around.  Try going in different directions for different looks.

Just how much text shows through is up to you.  I like good color coverage, but still want to be able to see some of the words.  I also chose a page that had some illustrations on it, which is another option.
Allow the first layer of paint to dry thoroughly.  Then repeat with a third color if desired.

If you click on the photo for a close up, you'll see that text and some of the illustrations are still faintly visible.
You may want to add a fourth color, and although I did pick a fourth, I decided to stop at three.
At this point that optional sanding block might be used.
I cut a 4x4 piece for my project, attached it to a coaster, and it looked like this:

I decided that I wanted to tone the mustard color down a bit, so I (gently!) sanded some of the paint off with the block, and really like the resulting distressed look:

I then completed the piece with an image from PID sheet #716. Since the theme is "Say Something," I added some words that I cut from a magazine.

As always, if you try this technique, let us know how you like it, and post your art to the group.

Fabric Image Transfer by Eileen Bellomo

Supplies:  Your favorite PID image
                  A piece of scrap fabric
                  Scraps of lace, trimmings, etc.
                  Small length of chain, beads
                  Glue (I used Glossy Accents)
                  Photo Transfer Medium
There are many techniques to transfer a photograph or printed image to a piece of fabric.  I used a photo transfer medium, because that’s what I already had.  But you can use other gel mediums as well

As for the embellishments, raid your stash!  I am not a sewer, but found scraps of lace and some fabric trim that would do nicely.
Follow the directions for the medium you are using.  Generally, you apply it to the face of your image and press it into your fabric:

Using something like the back of a spoon, really burnish the image into your fabric.  Let it dry completely.  I put it aside for a few hours, but I think you can hasten the process with a heat tool or iron.

Then moisten the paper and begin to gently rub it off.  I actually held the fabric under running water and rubbed with my thumb.  There may be some white fuzzies left, but they can be removed with some gentle erasing with a gum eraser.

I cut my fabric with the image transfer into an oval shape, glued it onto a piece of chipboard, and then added the lace and fabric trim.  To finish it off, I put a few beads on a short bit of chain and attached it to the back so it dangles off to one side.  And here is my finished piece, which can be a wall hanging, part of a larger piece, such as a shadow box.  It could even be a brooch with the addition of a pin back.

Valentines Project by Angie Hall-Haviland

LOVE IS...
Flowers In My Vase
VASE

Supplies I used:
4 1 1/2 inch wooden cubes
Paper Imagery Designs Images (sheets 721, 422, 445)
18 1 1/2 squares of pretty cardstock
sandpaper (I use a large emory board from the discount store)
test tube
lace (6 pieces about 5 inches long)
paper typewriter key letters
strong glue (e-6000)
glue stick
Distress Ink in Tea Dye
makeup sponge/wedge
fresh cut flowers (artificial will work of course)
Rhinestones
scissors

Here's how you can make your own....

Cover wooden cubes with pretty cardstock and images from Paper Imagery Designs. Sand edges of the images on the cubes.  Lightly ink all edges of the cubes.  Add L O V E Circle Letters.  Start with the bottom cube glue two lace pieces to the top glue next cube on top, repeat with next two cubes....until you have cube, lace, cube, lace, cube, lace, cube.  Let Dry.  Be sure to test the placement of your cubes with your test tube to make sure it will fit nicely next to the cubes.  When dry, tie lace pieces around test tube and trim.  Add water and flowers.  My test tube had a marking/logo on it so I covered that with left over PID Image piece and added some rhinestones.
