Technique Tuesday - Faux Marble Background

Welcome to Technique Tuesday!  There are many ways to get a faux marble look for your backgrounds, but this is one of my favorites, because it is low-tech, low-cost, easy as can be, yet looks great.
Here is all you need:

light colored cardstock
waxed paper
2 - 3 colors of ink

Crumple up a piece of waxed paper, and using it as a stamp, tap onto one of the ink pads then dab onto the cardstock.  Twist your hand from time to time so the pattern looks random.  Leave plenty of the cardstock showing.  Here's how it looks after applying the first color (it photographed a little light, but it is a nice green):

Repeat the process with another color ink and a new piece of waxed paper (I used blue this time):

Here is another sample.  This time I used three shades of purples and pinks:

This week's challenge at the PID yahoo group is "Paris," and I used this background technique in my ATC:

The Eiffel Tower is a rubber stamp I had in my stash.  All the text and the images are from PID's Art Nouveau collage sheets (#671-674).

You're likely to have everything you need to try this right now.  For a variation on the look, use crumpled up plastic wrap or a wad of bubble wrap instead of the waxed paper.  Let us know how it turns out for you.  Now, go make some art!

Technique Tuesday - Decorative Napkin Backgrounds

Welcome to Technique Tuesday!  This week's challenge theme at the PID Yahoo group is books.  I did an ATC and a postcard, and used two versions of the decorative napkin background technique.  Here is what you'll need:

an adhesive that dries clear (I used a matte gel medium here.  You can use white glue, decoupage medium, PPA, just about anything.  You can choose a matte or glossy finish)
a decorative napkin
cardboard or cardstock backing
inexpensive brush

First carefully separate the layers (usually there are two) and discard the plain layer.  If you don't do this when using adhesive you will probably have problems getting the napkin to adhere properly.

If you want to preserve the design as is, simply coat your backing with adhesive, lay the napkin down on it, and apply another layer of adhesive:

For a totally different look, tear the napkin into smaller pieces and apply them to the backing collage-style, overlapping the pieces. Again, when finished apply additional adhesive over the top.

Don't worry about papers that hangs over the edges.  When everything is dry, you can trim them away.

Here is the ATC I did using the collage technique with PID sheets #649 and #666:

And this is the postcard I did using the decorative napkin as is with PID sheets #649 and #494:

This is fun and easy.  Give it a try and let us know how you like it.  You can also create beautiful backgrounds with decorative napkins and beeswax, but that's for a future Technique Tuesday!

Technique Tuesday....Paper Bargello....

Happy Tuesday everyone....today I'm filling in for Eileen and thought I'd share a technique that I've been doing for years and just LOVE. I save my paper scraps and seems I always have lots of left over strips. I have a small drawer full and keep a cup of them on my table. I think Bargello is a BEAUTIFUL technique and can be used on quilts, with needlepoint, and of course painting.....but I think the fastest and possibly easiest is Paper Bargello.

Supplies:
Paper strips
scrap paper
glue (I use glue stick)
exacto (or straight edge cutting metod you prefer)
ruler/straight edge
This technique can be used on any scale and can be changed around in many ways to get different effects. I'm just sharing the basic idea and how I made this ATC.

I used a 3 x 4 paper scrap as my base, it was a lightweight card stock but you can use anything it's just to hold your bargello strips together and they will be glued to your final piece later. I then gathered a pile of paper strips that I thought looked nice together. I arranged different strips on the paper base until I thought the patterns and colors looked nice together and then glued them to the base. I used many different types...scrapbook paper, wallpaper, old greeting cards, and colored cardstock. All different sizes and textures...just grabbed what I thought looked nice...the key is .....don't over think it.

Once your paper strips are glued to the base....trim to the size of the original paper base. Then turn your piece on it's side and use your straight edge and cut strips. I cut with the front side down and number my pieces on the back as I go so I can put them in order later ... just a personal preference. You can cut the same size strips of different size strips ... it's up to you. I knew these were going to be on an ATC so I wanted smaller strips that would give me a bit of movement so I cut 1/8, 1/4 and 3/8 inch strips. This 3x4 piece gave me enough strips to make two ATCs.

To use my strips on an ATC I prepared my ATC with a piece of scrapbook paper for a background. I then arranged the strips....many possibilities here....I just went pretty basic with one strip up, one slightly down, one up..etc. You can arrange them in so many different ways and get many patterns....so fun. Decide how you want them and then use your glue stick to glue them to your ATC. I went around the edges of my bargello with paint and then added a BEAUTIFUL little PID Stone Angel, a bit of torn dryer sheet, the word beautiful, and glitter glue...then distressed the edges with a nail file.

Hope everyone will enjoy this technique and have some FUN with it. :)

Pretty Little Gift Pouch....

I saw an ad recently on a magazine for a new green magazine and there was a toilet tissue roll made into a gift pouch. I really really love to recycle, reuse, and repurpose everything I can. I wanted my Toilet tissue roll gift pouch to be reusable...what good is recycling if the person you give it to throws it right in the trash?? and of course I wanted it to be pretty :O)

The possiblities are endless for these Pretty Little Gift Pouches....For mine I used scraps and had a blast making it. They are a wonderful size...they will hold a necklace, charms, little goodies, a gift card or something everyone loves $$. I'm thinking come Christmas time...add a ribbon for hanging and put them on the tree :)
So you will need.....
Toilet Tissue Roll
Paper and/or trim scraps
glue
hole punch
ribbon
misc. items (I even used a candy wrapper from my current favorite chocolates)
Image from Paper Imagery Designs
acrylic paint
I painted my tissue roll with an off white acrylic paint and let it dry. Then flattened my tissue roll and glued the bottom closed (put close pins on it to hold it closed while drying). I then glued on papers, pieces of foil candy wrapper, and this sweet little PID image....added a scrap of lace and a flower and button center. Then I punched holes in the top. I added the surprise gift to the inside and then strung a length of ribbon into the holes and tied a bow. That's it. FUN!!

Time for the Weekly Challenge (10-12)....

This weeks challenge theme is USE THOSE SCRAPS!! Surely you have snipplets of this and pieces of that left over from other projects that you just can't stand to throw out.

Hope you'll play along and use them up. Please remember to use a Paper Imagery Designs image in your piece and share with us if you do.

I made an ATC and a Gift Pouch...

And I have two BEAUTIFUL pieces to share from Our Eileen Bellomo...who is off this week on an ART Cruise.

Stay Tuned and check back. I'll be back later today with a instructions on how I made the Gift Pouch and Tomorrow I'll fill in on Technique Tuesday for Eileen and share the technique for my ATC Background. Hope everyone has a FUN and ART filled week!!

Technique Tuesday - Double Embossing

Welcome to Technique Tuesday!  I used this simple embossing technique for this week's PID challenge -- orange and brown.
This is what you need:

Light colored cardstock (I used white for this one), two different embossing folders, and two ink pads (obviously for the theme I used orange and brown).  Of course you also need an embossing machine.  Or, I'm told a pasta machine works too.  I've even heard that a rolling pin and a lot of muscle work, but never tried that!
Run the cardstock through with one of the embossing folders.

Swipe with one of the colors.  Only the embossed areas will pick up the color:

Put the paper into the second embossing folder and run it through the machine THREE times.  This will flatten out the original embossing (while leaving the color), and emboss with the design of the second folder.  Swipe the paper with the second color and you have this:

And here is the ATC I made with this technique,  and the adorable Abigail image:

Quick and easy, just the way I like it!  If you try this, let us know how it worked for you.
