'Stitch Imagery' Charm Bracelet

By Kelli Nina Perkins
The content of this blog post is courtesy of the Interweave’s eNewsletter - Cloth Paper Scissors Embellishments

These stitched-image charms are a lovely showcase for your journal art and doodles. Take some favorite images and sketch them out on watercolor paper. For this bracelet, I created some small painted cupcakes, but you can cut up a piece of abstract art or even reduce photos to create your charms.

Materials:

  • Stitched-image charmsSmall paintings or photos
  • Sewing machine
  • Scanner
  • Inkjet-ready muslin or cotton
  • Inkjet printer
  • Fiberfill
  • Embroidery floss/needle
  • Eyelets
  • Jump rings
  • Bracelet

Optional:

Directions:

  1. Small images or photosCreate 6 or more small images or photos. You can reduce them after scanning, so make them a workable size, but not too large. I drew some cupcake outlines in permanent marker, glued on some book text, then painted them with watercolors.

  2. Stitch around the paper images with a free-motion foot and black thread to create a sketched look.

  3. Scan the images into your computer and reduce them. Each charm should measure about 1", including a border for sewing.

  4. Print the images on a sheet of inkjet-ready muslin and allow them to dry. Cut out the charms.

  5. Cupcake exampleStitch around 3 sides with a sewing machine, leaving a 1/8" border. Stuff each charm with fiberfill and finish the final edge.

  6. Edge each charm with colorful embroidery floss, using a blanket stitch.

  7. Punch a hole in the corner of each charm and add a small eyelet.

  8. Attach the charms to your bracelet with jump rings, adding buttons, felt bobbles, or other charms.

Father's Day Coupon Book by Eileen

Are you at a loss when it comes to selecting a gift for the dads in your life? A coupon book is a fast and easy idea, plus it's a gift that can be enjoyed more than once.

Cut a piece of cardstock to 11x3" and fold in half to make a long thin book.

Decorate it with a masculine feel. I stamped the front with vintage script, and dry brushed some white paint over top. I used images from PID collage sheet #341, and the letters are stickers I had in my stash.

Then use your computer to print up some coupons appropriate for the dad who is getting them. They can be for a car wash, the chance to choose any action flick for movie night, the dessert of his choice, a weekend without chores. Be creative!

Insert the coupons in the book, put it in an evelope and you have a great gift....and you didn't even have to go shopping.

This weeks Nest Challenge

This week Angie picked one of my favorite subjects for the weekly challenge on the PID yahoo group. Nest......I love using bird nests and bird images in my art. Here is a 6 x 6 piece I did using two sheets available at the Paper Imagery Designs website.
The large image of the bird is from the Bird Cabinet Card Sheet # 177 and the nest image is sheet # 434 Birds Nest.
No matter what size art work you enjoy making you can find an image at the PID site.
Below is an atc I also made for the challenge. The little darling baby is Serena #395..

Stencil Background Technique by Eileen Bellomo

No, this is not your granny's stencil art! So go grab one of those plastic stencils you thought you'd never use again and try this quick and easy (and very cool) background technique.

Here is what you'll need:

plastic stencil
one or two dye ink pads
water mister
cardstock

Swipe the ink pads directly over the stencil. If you're using two colors, swipe the lighter one first.

Spray the entire stencil with water from your mister.

Press the cardstock onto the the wet stencil. Apply even pressure but don't smoosh the paper around.
The result is a very soft water-color looking background for your art. Let it dry, cut it to the desired size and make some art.

The effect you get with this technique depends on many things. The stencil you use, of course, but also the ink color and the amount of water. Spray less water for deeper tones, more for a more subtle look. I used two colors in the same family, but two complementary colors will give a totally different look. This piece was done on smooth cardstock. Try using textured paper or watercolor paper and see what happens.
This is easy and fun, so experiment a little and see what you come up with!

Father's Day Gift Ideas from Eileen Bellomo

Bolo-Style Tie for Father’s Day

Supplies:
Bamboo tile
Waxed cord (about 30”)
PID Collage Images – sheets #216, #339
Glossy Accents (Ranger)
Two seed beads, two decorative beads (from your stash)

Directions:

Find a masculine image to cover the bamboo tile. I like the map on collage sheet #339 and the doorknob/keyhole on collage sheet # 216.

Using the bamboo tile as a template, trace around the image and cut it out.

Glue the image onto the bamboo tile using Glossy Accents, making sure the edges are well adhered.

Cover the image with a layer of Glossy Accents. I just squeeze a little blob of it out and smooth it over the entire image with a finger tip.

When dry, assemble into a bolo tie:

Thread one end of the cord through both holes on one side of the tile and the other end through the holes on the other side.

Find seed beads that fit on your cord but aren't loose. These beads will allow the wearer to adjust the tile as desired. Put one on each side of the cord and after making sure there will be room for the tie to fit over the head, knot under each seed bead.

Then add your decorative beads and knot again.

To wear, put the tie over the head and move the tile to the desired position. Push the seed beads up to just below the tile.

Variation: You can wrap foil tape around the edges of the tile for a metallic look, but I like that my version is so fast and easy.

Fast and Fun Bottle Cap Charms (Tutorial)

Supplies you'll need....

Bottlecap (new/uncrimped)
Rubber Mallet
Thin chipboard (can also be recycled cereal/food box)
1" Circle Punch (optional...but most helpful)..or circle Template
Scissors
Angie's Nest Paper Imagery Design Collage Sheet #628 (or other images you like)
Glue (I used Fabri-Tac)
Glue Stick (HEE HEE I ordered my sheet #628 as a sticker sheet)
Black Sharpie (optional)
Awl
JumpRing
Packing Tape Or Diamond Glaze, etc.

Start with a new uncrimped bottlecap. There are many places on the internet that sell them.
Bang the bottle cap a few times on each side with the rubber mallet (you can also use a regular hammer...but made scuff your bottle cap) on a hard surface. I've heard of some people doing this on concrete but I find that a cutting mat or block of wood works just fine. This will flattened the bottlecap and cause the edges to curl under.

Poke a hole with an awl...(or you may use a nail).

Use the hole punch to punch out your image and a chipboard circle.

Glue circle image on top of the chipboard circle. Apply clear packing tape to the top of the image and smooth. Trim the packing tape.

Edge the circle image with a black sharpie for nice finished edges. With a strong glue (fabri-Tac, all purpose white glue, etc), glue the image into the bottle cap.

Add a Jumpring. Your charm is now ready to hang anywhere.

A second option it to NOT cover your image in packing tape...but add a clear glossy layer of Diamond Glaze (or similar clear demensional sealer/glaze)

With a pin you can pop any bubbles and spread the glaze to the edges. Set aside to dry until clear. The add your jumpring.

Here are two necklaces I made with my finish charms. The first will go to my PID Mingle Partner and the second could be yours....

If you'd like to win this necklace (one on the white background) just leave a comment and include the words "Pick Me" in your comment. I will draw a winner from the comments on June 15th. Please be sure you leave a way for me to contact you.
****WINNER HAS BEEN DRAWN!! Thanks to everyone that left comments!!****
